Anise is a brandy made from matalahúga or matalahúva, a small seed of a medium shrub that ceased to be wild, to, due to demand, be grown as a preferred product in agriculture.
It has magnificent properties that stimulate appetite, is digestive – check it before eating or after a copious meal – and diuretic. It can be taken only in short, natural or cold glass; or in a long glass mixed a part in three or four of very cold water and ice and a little sugar to taste – the popular "popcorn" – and always in small amounts. A few drops in the coffee, infusions, ice cream and pastry are admirable.
