Eating ice cream doesn't help overcome a breakup
When we feel sad or depressed, for example, after a breakup with our partner, we usually resort to chocolate or, in general, sweets and treats to help us feel better. Well now, recent research from the University of Minnesota (USA) says the homemade antidote to our emotional afflictions doesn't work at all, as it doesn't improve our mood
For their study, experts induced a bad mood in 100 college students by continually making them watch videos of dramatic, very sad films. They then offered half of the participants their favorite food or foods considered "comfort" and, in the other half, foods that had nothing to do with these supposedly comforting meals.
Once they had all finished eating, the researchers asked the students how they felt. They all felt much better, regardless of what they had eaten. "That's not what we expected. We keep repeating the study, because we don't believe it," says Traci Mann, the studio leader.
They conducted a second experiment. This time, after the tear film session, half the volunteers were able to eat everything they wanted and the other half could not eat anything. After asking them what their mood was at the time, both groups claimed to feel better, so comfort food, again, had no effect on mood.
