Sugar is not to blame for the overweight

In this sense, a new study has dismantled the myths around sugar, stating that its moderate consumption is highly healthy and that it cannot be the "eating head" of the obesity and diabetes epidemic we suffer today. The work, coordinated by Drs. Carmen Gómez Candela and Samara Palma, both of the Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Unit of the University Hospital La Paz, has been included in the "White Paper of Sugar", a publication that is now available in electronic format.

Sugar enjoys a very bad reputation as it is considered a hypercaloric food and banned in most weight-loss diets. Dr. Gómez Candela, however, claims that sugar behaves like any other carbohydrate providing four calories per gram and that there is no scientific evidence to associate her consumption with the development of obesity. What is actually related to obesity is a positive energy balance, i.e. with an energy intake higher than the body's requirements, which is relatively common because of the lack of physical exercise. In short, sugar is by no means the sole cause of caloric excess.

According to the authors of the work, blaming this food for the accumulation of fat in the body and completely suppressing it from the diet while maintaining sedentary lifestyles and other bad practices will only serve to aggravate our health.
